The University of Chicago - Chicago, IL

Department

HUM Staff: Div Admin PA - Computing - Academic

About the Department

Since the founding of the University of Chicago in 1892, the departments of the Division of the Humanities at Chicago have set an international standard for humanistic inquiry. The Division's faculty consistently produces pioneering research in the study of language, literature, and culture. The Division of the Humanities comprises approximately eighteen degree-granting programs, with about 900 students from around the world enrolled in our PhD, MFA, and MA programs. Our interdisciplinary centers and programs support faculty and student research interests that range from the civilization of the ancient Near East to the philosophy of mind, from computational linguistics to poetics, from film music to East Asian visual culture. Humanities Computing comprises the staff that provide core technological services to facilitate and support the work of the Division’s faculty, students, and staff.

Job Summary

Humanities Computing is seeking a full time software engineer to help us write, maintain, and operate web applications to meet the Division's administrative and research needs.

Our users are in house, so we design carefully for the long term, not for the next quarter or contract. We have direct relationships with our end users to ensure that our software meets real needs, not just looking good in a slide deck. We are a small team (4-6 people) who control most of our technology stack (from the hardware up). You will not be a cog in a repetitive machine, but rather will have the opportunity to work and develop skills in a range of areas, both on core software expected to last a decade and short experimental projects, greenfield and maintenance, front end user engagement and back end infrastructure.

We expect you to have experience with a web application stack, but not necessarily with ours. Currently we use Ruby on Rails / Ember.js (custom apps), PHP/Drupal/WordPress (public web), Ansible (infrastructure automation), bare metal/VMWare/AWS (compute). We also use additional tech in smaller roles as needed, especially for academic research prototyping. We will provide time and mentoring for you to learn any tech that we use, and you will help us determine how our tech stack evolves in the future.

Humanities Computing is currently eligible to continue hybrid work. We have offices on campus and work approximately Chicago business hours. Remote, hybrid, or onsite options will likely be available for this position.
