Athena Trade & Risk Services (ATRS) is a global team responsible for building common business components on J.P. Morgan's strategic trade and risk management platform, Athena. Our components are used across multiple businesses and products for trade booking and trade management, price calculation, risk management, and P&L reporting.

What is required?

You are strongly motivated to learn and do engineering right - to find the simplest solutions to complex problems, to build resilient, scalable components that meet client needs and are robust in busy trading environments, and to collaborate effectively with others across the world. Writing tests, object modelling and refactoring are core parts of your engineering practice.

About Athena

Athena is J.P. Morgan's cross-market risk management and trading system that provides functionality for traders, salespeople and operations staff globally. It is used in our foreign exchange, fixed income & credit and commodities businesses. Athena includes a globally replicated object-oriented database, a powerful dependency graph and a fully integrated stack across pricing, risk and trading tools. The code is a combination of Python and C++: C++ for speed, and Python for flexibility and rapid but controlled releases. Athena is designed to provide a continuous deployment environment, and pull developers close to the business to help increase revenues, while improving operational processes and controls to reduce costs.

Required attributes:

  • Excellent analytical skills (i.e. problem solving)


  • Willingness to become proficient and develop in Python if not already a primary language.

  • Good understanding of Agile development methodologies.

  • Focus on testing through the entire development cycle to produce reliable and maintainable software.

  • Enthusiastic to keep learning and growing, in technical aptitude and business understanding.

  • Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms and enterprise architecture

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Object Oriented Language (Java, C++)

  • Knowledge of distributed systems

  • Experience in service-oriented architecture and API implementation

  • Knowledge of the products traded in capital markets, business processes and applications underpinning them
