About the Role:

Transfix is making major investments in our Product Engineering and Data & Analytics teams and we're looking for a Director of Engineering to oversee our growing Core Platform and Data Infrastructure teams. Reporting directly to the VP of Engineering, in this role you'll lead initiatives spanning cloud infrastructure, development and production environments, data infrastructure, production observability, and a selection of software services. You'll lead the development of platforms that support our software and data models, which are revolutionizing how freight is moved across the country! You'll also manage a team of engineers that will support the growing demands of our Product Engineering and Data Science organizations.

Our software platform and products are developed in Ruby on Rails, Python, React, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, and Redis and deployed to AWS using Kubernetes. Our data warehouse is composed of Snowflake DB, Looker, Airflow, DBT, and a variety of other services.

Note: This role is part of Transfix's fully-remote Engineering team. Our headquarters is based in New York City, and we are prioritizing candidates who are based in Eastern, Central, and Atlantic time zones

In this Role You Will:

  • Enable delivery and operation of great software through exceptional developer tools, dev environments, CI/CD pipelines, and observability tools.
  • Collaborate with our Data & Analytics team to deliver a significant redesign of the data infrastructure and pipelines feeding our data warehouse.
  • Partner with Data Scientists to continuously improve our ability to design, train, validate, and deploy data models providing automation and decision augmentation throughout the freight lifecycle.
  • Manage our AWS cloud infrastructure, instill best practices for access controls, network and application security, and vulnerability monitoring, and manage costs.
  • Partner with the CTO, VP of Engineering, and other stakeholders to scope and plan roadmaps with the goal of continuously supporting the Product Engineering and Data Science teams
  • Guide team members in setting goals and defining shared standards for quality, mentor them toward successful delivery, and hold honest conversations when work isn't going well
  • Manage and grow a team of engineers, with a strong focus on organizational design, hiring, training, professional development, and mentorship
  • Play an active role in technical operations for our products and services, collaborating with team members and stakeholders to resolve outages and other incidents.
  • Devise a budget and manage expenses
  • Institute formal policies and procedures as necessary for applicable compliance requirements

You're an Excellent Fit for this Role if:

  • You have 8+ years in a software engineering, data engineering, or site reliability engineering position
  • You have 3+ years of experience high performing and collaborative engineering teams - and you've preferably managed at least 8 direct reports
  • You have 3+ years of experience managing cloud infrastructure - this includes working with AWS or GCP and managing CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure-as-Code, and observability platforms
  • You have 2+ years of experience managing data infrastructure and/or data engineering responsibilities - you have familiarity with areas such as DB backups, replication, ETL, batch and stream processing, and data warehouse platforms
  • You have a working knowledge of application security and cloud security concepts such as IAM, vulnerability scanning, penetration testing
  • You have deep experience in Ruby and/or Python, and have worked with a variety of modern web technologies leveraging Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery.
  • You advocate for best practices and high-quality code in your teams and are thoughtful about prioritizing improvements that make meaningful impacts on your customers and your team
  • You have a bias toward action - shipping, learning, and iterating
  • You can constructively disagree with others while building and maintaining trust and respect

You're A Mile Ahead If:

  • You have familiarity with ML Ops and supporting teams of Data Scientists
  • You have familiarity with compliance regimes such as SOX, SOC2, PCI-DSS, ISO 27001, NIST CSF
