Color Of Change - New York, NY

ABOUT COLOR OF CHANGE

Color Of Change is the nation’s largest online racial justice organization. As a national online force driven by over one million members, we help people respond effectively to injustice in the world around us, moving decision makers in corporations and government to create a more human and less hostile world for Black people in America. We activate our members to act on critical issues—from criminal justice to media representations to the social safety net and voter freedom—so that we can build the power necessary to transform the written and unwritten rules of society.

ROLE SUMMARY

Color Of Change is hiring a full-time Program Director to lead our Media, Culture and Economic Justice Team training and support initiative and create programs that develop understanding and engagement in our corporate accountability work on our Media Culture and Economic Justice Team. This position is ideal for candidates with strong organization, planning, communication and problem-solving skills. Ideally, candidates will have insight and previous digital campaigning and/or community organizing experience, and experience leading initiatives with civil rights, racial justice and/or equity framework. The right candidate will be committed to getting results in a fast-paced environment and be able to handle competing priorities. Program Directors are charged with managing a team of Program Managers to develop short and long-term strategies and launch them into impactful programs and initiatives that work to make change in the daily lives of Black people. This position reports directly to the Deputy Senior Campaign Director of the department and will work closely with team members throughout the organization to achieve Color Of Change’s mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

To succeed as a Program Director, we’ve identified four areas of responsibility - grouped into Programs, Technology, Communications, and Management.

Program & Initiatives

  • Own development of a solid strategic plan for your programs and initiatives. With the support of the Deputy Senior Campaign Director, develop programs and initiatives with clear outcomes and strategy that help push forward calls-to-action and powerful theories of change, using both proven and experimental online and offline tactics, to design programs and initiatives that engage the COC membership, activates new members and pressures targets to win real-world change.
  • Build relationships with organizations and grassroots leaders who launch petitions on our Organize For petition platform to gain insight into their needs and current capacity-building opportunities. Support these organizations and grassroots leaders through training, communication and storytelling strategies, event and program strategies.
  • Track outreach, engagement and progress to goals for the team’s Organize For, programs and fundraising strategies, and pivot when necessary.
  • Partner with COC’s corporate accountability team to understand campaign work and set goals to build out programs for corporate accountability – programs are the campaigns translators for members. They educate members beyond the email. (Think training, town halls, videos, graphic series, design and creative development work.)
  • Iterate. Constantly revise your plans in response to real-world developments - both internally and externally. Solicit input from team members and partners to create a process for implementing program and initiative-based work. Flexibility is your middle name.
  • Execute your program and initiative plans. Oversee a team of staffers, external consultants, vendors to support the solid execution of program plans and meet strategic goals. Build relationships with movement partners and be able to work well within an interdependent team structure in order to drive rapid response and long-term program and initiatives.
  • Speak Publicly. Be an effective public ambassador for Color Of Change - whether it's for media, funders, and/or members, the person is capable of presenting a strong personal narrative of their relationship to this work, as well as talking about the vision and work of Color Of Change in a way that is aligned with organizational talking points.
  • Evaluate. Is it working? Rigorously analyze data, report out on the impact of our Programs and learn, learn, learn and share out.
  • Participate actively on your department team, on the Campaigns Team and as a part of the overall COC leadership to share responsibility in developing an inclusive, learning-based culture that centers campaigns to make real-world change in the lives of Black people - one way you will do that is by developing creative programs that support key campaign buckets.
  • Fundraising. Works with Senior Campaign Director and Deputy Senior Campaign Director to develop departmental strategies and programs for fundraising efforts.

Technology

  • Innovate. Experiment with creative ways of leveraging technology to make good things happen, and know how to measure what "good" means.
  • Consult with Color Of Change’s Technology team and other external technology consultants to build engaging online tools for our members.
  • Use our tools. Adeptly use our suite of online organizing tools (ActionKit, Share Progress, Falcon, Mobilize) to stage email blasts, landing pages, donation pages, social media content, etc.
  • Use tools like VAN, Catalyst, etc. Basic familiarity with HTML and social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

Communications

  • Write. Create strong, persuasive and poppy emails, op-eds, text messages, press releases, etc. under a deadline. If the pen is mightier than the sword, your pen must be mighty indeed.
  • Sum it up. Quickly synthesize information and communicate it back out to multiple audiences – members, staff, allies, etc.
  • Conscious, not colorblind. Despite the trendiness of terms like “colorblind,” “personal responsibility” and “post-racial,” you understand that Black people face systemic barriers to opportunity and you’re up for the challenge of re-educating the masses.
  • Stay on message.

Management

  • Manage staff to achieve program goals, and to develop their leadership through practice.
  • Manage relationships with service providers, vendors, consultants and other contractors as necessary to successfully execute on your program strategy.
  • Be Responsive. We are a racial justice organization that must remain consistently responsive to the news cycle and what's happening in the world. As such, this is not a standard 9-5 job and as part of your role, you may be called on to work early mornings, evenings, late nights, and weekends when moments break.

QUALIFICATIONS

In this role and organization, strategic thinking, communication, organization and flexibility are paramount. While experience in a similar role in the civil rights sector is not required, experience in program development, community organizing and a commitment to civil rights and racial justice is. A qualified candidate should have:

  • 3+ years experience in program development, community organizing and/or communications work. Experience working as a program lead with a focus on civil rights and/or member engagement will also be considered. Event and visual design ability is not required but a plus.
  • Exceptional writing skills. The ability to communicate information clearly is fundamental to this role. You will be asked to draft program documents, edit others, and engage with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to develop program assets.
  • Exceptional communication skills. The ability to clearly communicate with the staff you are working within the organization and external partners, consultants and vendors, and media are paramount; especially in fast-paced moments, you’ll need to be on message, clear and ask for clarity in return.
  • A deep racial justice analysis and a strong ability to effectively use a Black/racial justice frame of reference to write compelling and persuasive program and engagement materials.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit. This ambitious drive is necessary for owning the work in your issue area and should also be combined with the ability to be creative and work quickly.
  • Top-notch organization skills. If the books on your bookshelf are in alphabetical order, your notes utilize colors with specific meanings, and you find long to-do lists energizing, we want to talk to you! There’s a lot to keep track of in this role, and nothing can fall through the cracks. Meeting quick deadlines is key.
  • A commitment to confidentiality. In this role, you’ll have a window into movement and organizational politics at the highest level – confidentiality is key.
  • Constructive optimism. The work that we do – be it political, organizing, or creative – is all about the art of the possible. While we’re looking to remedy deep structural issues, our progress comes incrementally – a series of wins, some small and some large, that help advance us closer to the systemic change we seek.
  • Management skills. While management experience is not a prerequisite for this role, skills in developing talent - training, coaching, planning, delegation, and accountability will be crucial to development in the management part of this position.

The salary for the Program Director- Media, Culture and Economic Justice is $110,000. This is a full-time exempt position. Color Of Change also offers a competitive benefits package.
