Job Description Summary
The Palliative and Advanced Illness Research Center is seeking an associate research data scientist (data analyst) to support the Center's research efforts in training and validating prediction models for clinical care, risk adjustment, and other research, clinical, and policy goals. The associate research data scientist must demonstrate a strong understanding of research concepts and the ability to implement these in code, ideally in the healthcare setting, and be able to discuss both technical requirements and study design considerations effectively with collaborators within and external to the PAIR Center. The associate research data scientist will be embedded within project teams to develop, document, and execute data and analytic workflows. This individual will also be responsible for preparing exhibits and methods descriptions for grants and publications on behalf of the Center; collaborating with the Penn Predictive Healthcare Team to transition clinical prediction models into deployment; and using best practices for computational research including use of version control, detailed documentation of code and methods, and supporting efforts to promote transparency and reproducibility with open-source tools.

Job Description

The successful candidate must have experience developing and executing data queries using SQL, and also have experience preparing datasets and fitting and evaluating models in R. Experience with Python, Linux, Azure, LSF, git, GitHub, markdown, and statistical learning techniques are strongly preferred, but not required. The candidate must have a willingness to learn such new skills, with close supervision and opportunities for training and career development, as they arise to meet project needs. Above all, attention to detail and the ability to clearly and concisely convey nuanced technical information to different audiences (project managers, investigators, technical and non-technical external stakeholders, statisticians/analysts, other data analysts) will be essential to this individual's success in the position.

Analyst C:
Develop and refine data queries from large health care databases using SQL
Train and validate clinical prediction models using R
Analyze results of predictive modeling studies and communicate results with team members
Clearly document and maintain code in a collaborative environment using version control systems (e.g. git and GitHub)
Develop figures and tables based on data analyses to support manuscript publications and grant submissions
Attend research team meetings

Analyst D:
Perform all duties as listed above
Manage and oversee the work of students, trainees, and research assistants
Develop and publish open-source software packages based on research activities
Maintain relationships and collaborate with the Penn Predictive Healthcare Team and other research groups

Qualifications

Required Analyst C:
1-3 years of data analysis experience in healthcare research or a related area - or a master's degree in a related area with 1-2 years of experience
Experience processing data using SQL and analyzing data using R
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

Required Analyst D:
3-5 years of data analysis experience in healthcare research or a related area - or a master's degree in a related area with 2-3 years of experience
Experience processing data using SQL and analyzing data using R
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

Preferred (C and D):
Experience with version control systems (e.g. git and GitHub), Python, and working in a Linux environment
Experience training and validating prediction models using statistical learning and data science techniques
