Job Summary
As many as one in four children in West Philadelphia live with asthma. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s (CHOP) Community Asthma Prevention Program (CAPP) was launched in 1997 by Founder and Medical Director Dr. Tyra Bryant-Stephens specifically to support these children. CAPP operates a Home Visitor Program, now expanded to all of Philadelphia and parts of Montgomery counties, utilizing peer community health workers to teach in-home classes and provide families with supplies to mitigate asthma triggers in the home environment, with the goal of improving asthma-related outcomes in children. CAPP also offers free asthma education classes at community sites throughout Philadelphia.

Job Responsibilities
  • Along with the Lead Home Visitor, coordinate and grow CAPP Academy – Program to train and certify community health workers for CHOP and outside partner organizations (includes coordinating and leading group discussions on various topics related to asthma triggers, treatment and care)
  • Schedule, coordinate and lead community classes, along with presentations from our community health workers – at local non-profit organizations/churches
  • Collaborate with other team members on planning and coordination of the annual Asthma Summit – an event in October that welcomes over 100 asthma experts, members of the community, clinicians, etc. to CHOP – This event might be a “hybrid” of in-person/virtual in future years after a successful virtual event in 2020.
  • Assist with development of an asthma education program for teens, including coordinating and running focus groups
  • Partner with public and charter K-12 schools in Philadelphia to implement asthma educational programming
  • Supervise a small team of School Ambassadors who provide school-based asthma education and interventions, coordinating and maintaining schedules and performing fidelity checks as needed
  • Launch a support group for interested CAPP parents and lead discussion, along with community health workers
Job Responsibilities (Continued)
  • Invite speakers to present to our staff (and perhaps CAPP families) on various topics pertaining to asthma
  • Develop and grow other teaching/educational opportunities for CAPP and assist with other duties as assigned.
  • Successful candidate must be ready to learn and be trained on the necessary asthma physiology/triggers information – but needs to be ready and experienced enough to teach others once trained
  • Manage and maintain operating budget, supplies and resources.
  • Maintain program metrics and related tools and regularly reports results.
  • Monitor and support related finance, accounting and billing functions.
  • Coordinate information collection, compilation and dissemination as required.
  • Provide advanced administrative support as needed.

This mandate also applies to workforce members performing work for CHOP at non-CHOP locations.
