Work you'll do:

  • Install and patch SQL Server software for standalone and clustered configurations.
  • Define, document, and implement SQL Server best practices for Deloitte database environments.
  • Define, document, and perform procedures for SQL Server database migrations (hardware refreshes, SQL version upgrades, on prem to cloud migrations).
  • Manage SQL Server AlwaysOn clusters for SQL 2014 and above running on Windows 2016 and above.
  • Develop and customize SQL Server maintenance jobs.
  • Monitor and remediate SQL Server maintenance job failures to include backups, DBCC and reindexing.
  • Troubleshoot database and instance performance problems.
  • Troubleshoot issues with SQL Server high availability solutions to include Windows Failover Clusters and SQL Server AlwaysOn for servers in private cloud and public cloud environments.
  • Review and provide feedback on scripts and procedures for SQL Server database changes.
  • Implement and maintain database security according to Deloitte security provisions.
  • Proactively monitor database systems to ensure minimum downtime.
  • Perform database analysis and provide tuning recommendations to include database instance configuration, add/drop/change indexes, query tuning, maintenance routines, etc.
  • Review SQL Server instances for standards compliance and best practices.
  • Provide excellent customer service for incident and service request tickets.
  • Work with development teams to ensure SQL development best practices are understood and implemented.
  • Review architecture and infrastructure plans to ensure that recommended server resources are adequate for optimum performance and provide high availability.
  • React to and resolve all database related warning and alarms from database monitoring system.
  • Provide database backup and recovery operation according to given strategy.
  • Review and analyze “critical (security) patch” information sent by Microsoft.
  • Manage database storage and capacity planning for internal database objects and database files.
  • Escalate and manage problems to resolution through Microsoft Support, SQL Development Team and/or third parties as appropriate.
  • Provide 24x7 on call support as scheduled.
  • Document SQL standards and team processes/procedures as needed

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in writing and modifying PowerShell scripts
  • Documentation skills for processes and procedures (creating Knowledge Base articles, work instructions, standards definitions, etc.)
  • Some level of understanding of AD and AD security principles
  • Knowledge of 3rd party monitoring tools and applications (SentryOne, SCOM)
  • Expert knowledge of SQL Server best practices as defined by Microsoft and generally accepted in the DBA community
  • Expert knowledge of backups, restores, recovery models and backup strategy design and implementation.
  • Expert knowledge of SQL installation, configuration and patching on standalone server, Windows failover cluster and SQL AlwaysOn cluster.
  • Ability to detect and troubleshoot SQL Server related CPU, Memory, I/O, disk space and other resource contention
  • Extensive troubleshooting ability to resolve database performance issues, blocking and deadlocking issues, connectivity issues, security issues, etc.
  • Ability to write and troubleshoot SQL Server TSQL automation scripts (backups, indexing, migrations, etc.)
  • Extensive operational support knowledge of SQL Server AlwaysOn
  • Extensive experience in SQL database engine infrastructure and support, version 2014 and higher
  • General knowledge of infrastructure technologies and how they relate to SQL performance (storage model/design, Windows OS, VMWare, clustering, public cloud technology)
  • 8+ years of experience in database administration in a large MS SQL Server environment

Education: College Diploma in Computer Science or equivalent work experience

Years of Experience:8+ years as SQL Server DBA
